City cyclists dare to bare in attempt to highlight road safety

-

CYCLISTS bared all and took to the streets of Cardiff on Saturday as part of the World Naked Bike Ride.

The cheeky event aims to raise awareness of cyclist safety.

Cardiff’s 10th annual ride attracted about 150 cyclists, many partially or completely naked, and some in fancy dress.

The riders set off from Sophia Gardens for an eight-mile cycle around the city. Organiser Mike Ambler said the event is important change driver mentalities.

He said: “You’ll see us when we’re naked, so you should see us when we’re not naked.”

The cyclists met up at about noon, stripped off and painted each other’s bodies on the grass behind Cardiff Museum.

There was a carnival-style atmosphere at the site, with drum music and horns blaring.

Cyclists headed out to Cardiff Bay through Cardiff city centre. Some stopped to jump into fountains in Callaghan Square for a cooling break to help on one of the hottest days of the year so far.

“This is about cyclists’ safety, the idea being that very often motorists don’t see cyclists. I know it is improving but so often they’re not seen,” Mike said.

“This is to highlight the vulnerability of the human body against a two-tonne machine.”
