Woodman ruled out, but keen to stay for season

-

FREDDIE Woodman will miss the remainder of the 2019/20 season due to injury.

The goalkeeper has been a mainstay in the Championship for Swansea City since joining on a season-long loan deal from Newcastle United last summer.

He had started every single league match this term, although he was forced off in the final stages of Swansea’s 1-0 loss to Leeds United at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday.

Speaking after the loss to the Whites, Steve Cooper revealed Woodman suffered a hip problem in injury time of the agonising defeat to Marcelo Bielsa’s men.

Woodman had a scan yesterday morning, and it was confirmed that he will be out of action for four to six weeks after sustaining an oblique injury.

He was unavailable for last night’s clash with Nottingham Forest, while he will also miss the Swans’ matches against Bristol City and Reading.

Erwin Mulder deputised in place of the young Englishman, with academy product Josh Gould set to feature in the squad for the remaining fixtures of the campaign.

It’s understood Woodman – who has made no secret of his desire to extend his stay with Swansea beyond the current campaign – is keen to stay with the Swans for the final week of the season as Cooper’s men go in search of a playoff spot, with plans to do at least some of his rehab in South Wales in the process.

Woodman, right, joins defensive duo Ben Wilmot and Joe Rodon in being ruled out for the remainder of the campaign due to injury.
