Thieves in £8,000 raid on family business
AFAMILY was left distraught when burglars made off with £8,000 worth of goods and cash from their shop after they had just stocked up for Christmas.
Officers were called to a report of a burglary at Market Street Food and Wine at 9.20am on Wednesday, December 21.
When opening up the newsagents, owner Chelani Derera said she was shocked to find the door had been broken and the premises was a mess.
She said burglars have stolen around £8,000 worth of goods including £4,000 of cigarettes and £3,000 of alcohol.
They also made off with £950 from a locked cash box.
Chelani, who has two children said: “We had just stocked up for Christmas and we had planned to open on Christmas Day.”
The 45-year-old added: “It’s a family-run business and we have a family to provide for and then this happens.”
A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: “The premises had damage to the front door and a significant amount of alcohol and cigarettes had been stolen.
“An investigation has started and officers are examining CCTV footage as well as completing house-to-house and a forensic examination of the premises.”
