Thieves in £8,000 raid on fam­ily busi­ness

AFAMILY was left dis­traught when bur­glars made off with £8,000 worth of goods and cash from their shop af­ter they had just stocked up for Christ­mas.

Of­fi­cers were called to a re­port of a bur­glary at Mar­ket Street Food and Wine at 9.20am on Wed­nes­day, De­cem­ber 21.

When open­ing up the newsagents, owner Che­lani Der­era said she was shocked to find the door had been bro­ken and the premises was a mess.

She said bur­glars have stolen around £8,000 worth of goods in­clud­ing £4,000 of cig­a­rettes and £3,000 of al­co­hol.

They also made off with £950 from a locked cash box.

Che­lani, who has two chil­dren said: “We had just stocked up for Christ­mas and we had planned to open on Christ­mas Day.”

The 45-year-old added: “It’s a fam­ily-run busi­ness and we have a fam­ily to pro­vide for and then this hap­pens.”

A spokesman for Mersey­side Po­lice said: “The premises had dam­age to the front door and a sig­nif­i­cant amount of al­co­hol and cig­a­rettes had been stolen.

“An in­ves­ti­ga­tion has started and of­fi­cers are ex­am­in­ing CCTV footage as well as com­plet­ing house-to-house and a foren­sic ex­am­i­na­tion of the premises.”
