Let’s continue to choose local
SO, with Christmas now over and 2016 coming to an end, what a perfect time to look back on what has – mostly – been a superb year for Southport.
The highlights so far? We’ve had some magnificent events, such as Southport Air Show, which celebrated its 25th anniversary with two days of wonderful displays.
Southport Flower Show was fantastic, with some stunning show gardens and Ainsley Harriott and Miss England Elizabeth Grant being excellent show openers.
Southport BID had a very busy year, with events such as Spookport, Southport Arts Festival and the ever-growing Southport Christmas Lights Switch-on bringing tens of thousands of people flocking into our town.
It has been great to see people investing in Southport, with a transformed Bold Hotel and lots of new bars and other businesses adding to the vibrancy of places like Southport town centre, Churchtown, Ainsdale and Birkdale.
But what lies ahead? Worryingly, Sefton Council meets early next year to decide how to begin cutting £64.4m from its already stretched budget over the next three years.
Work on a new vision for Southport, the Southport Development Framework, has begun – there are some great ideas in there which we hope will become a reality.
Over the past year, the Visiter has been running our Choose Local campaign, and that’s the one New Year’s resolution we want everyone in our town to make for 2017.
If we each divert an extra £5 from our weekly shopping bill to local shops, that’s an extra £15m in the local economy supporting local businesses, jobs and families. Here’s to a happy and prosperous New Year to you all.
