Golden evening at Greenbank High

OLYMPIC hockey Gold medal­list Su­san­nah Townsend was guest of hon­our at the Greenbank High School Sports Awards Evening.

Su­san­nah gave an in­spi­ra­tional speech af­ter re­liv­ing the win­ning mo­ments from the 2016 fi­nal in Rio with the au­di­ence of par­ents and pupils – and then pre­sented medals and awards to pupils and teams from an in­cred­i­ble ar­ray of sports in which Greenbank has ex­celled this year.

Prizes were given to teams, in­di­vid­u­als and awards for lead­er­ship.

They also cel­e­brated the ef­forts of pupils who they sup­port as a school – such as an English na­tional gym­nas­tic cham­pion and their ju­nior and in­ter­me­di­ate swim­ming teams who re­cently com­peted at the English Schools Swim­ming As­so­ci­a­tion fi­nals at The Lon­don Aquatic Cen­tre.

Ian Raikes, the head teacher, said: “We are so proud of all the achieve­ments of our bud­ding sports women who will maybe emu­late Su­san­nah in the fu­ture.

“We as a school are so proud of how many girls are in­volved in ex­tra-cur­ric­u­lar and com­pet­i­tive sport and en­joy the many ben­e­fits it brings.”
