MARBLE Place Shopping Centre is set to be demolished and replaced by a new seven-storey hotel, under radical plans submitted to Sefton Council.

The multi-million pound hotel would retain some shopping units, though some would be replaced by the reception and lobby area in a scheme which could kickstart the regeneration of the town.

The plans have been submitted by Humberside Investments Ltd, and would see the shopping centre, which is spread between Tulketh Street and Chapel Street, partially demolished for the building of the 96-bedroom hotel.

According to the application, the development would result in the loss of kiosk units, a charity shop and the To Die For cafe from the centre.

While the arcade currently also houses clothes shop TK Maxx, Crawshaw Butchers and discount store Savers, it is not yet known if any of these shops would be remain after the development, or if they would be replaced by new tenants.

The developers state the new hotel would bring “identity and functionality” to the Chapel Street area and to the town centre as a whole.

The application states: “This hotel proposal represents a major investment in Southport town centre.

“It will generate jobs, boost tourism and contribute to the vitality and viability of the town centre.

“The scheme is of a high-quality design and may serve to act as a catalyst for further investment and regeneration in the town centre.”

Lib Dem councillor Tony Dawson has welcomed the development as a sign of confidence in Southport’s future.

He said: “This is fantastic news, demonstrating a great deal of faith in the future of Southport’s visitor economy.

“Different aspects of our town centre and seafront area are moving forwards and backwards at the same time at the moment.

“But this project outweighs many of the smaller setbacks.

“It is a huge project which will have taken many, many months to work up.

“It is, in my view, just
