HIGHTOWN Community Centre has been granted funding from Community Link Foundation to enhance the service they offer.

They are a community group that provides a warm and welcoming place for residents of Hightown and surrounding areas and they meet at the Hightown Hotel on Lower Alt Road.

The organisation submitted an application for funding to buy more audio books and jigsaw puzzles for the library at the centre.

The application was considered at a board meeting last week and the trustees agreed to approve the request which will enhance the centre’s library section and make it an exciting place for their visitors.

Diane Lamont, Treasurer, said: “We are delighted to receive this grant from Community Link Foundation for the Hightown Community Centre.

“We already have a wellstocked library but this grant will help us to purchase some more audio books and jigsaw puzzles for the centre.

“We are unable to stock large print books because of lack of space and they are hard to come by in second-hand shops, but a good selection of audio books will help the more elderly or visually impaired visitors to our centre.

“The jigsaw puzzle table is proving particularly popular and a new supply of jigsaws will be very welcome.

“We are extremely indebted to Community Link Foundation for their generous help.”

The centre is open Monday to Friday and is run by a team of volunteers who are there to talk to people and provide free cups of tea and coffee.

They have lots of clubs for people to join, and a library.

Enda Rylands, chairman of Community Link Foundation, said: “We are delighted to be able to help Hightown Community Centre.

“They provide a great service to people in this area and we hope that the funding we have been able to give will further enhance that service.

“We are looking forward to seeing how the books help the centre and we wish them all the best for the future.”

The centre’s aim is to reduce loneliness and provide social cohesion and a feeling of belonging to all visitors.
