Crosby keep tight
CROSBY A tightened their grip at the top of Division One of the Southport and Formby table Tennis League, taking over the number one spot.
A commanding win at Argyle B, meant they are now level on 77pts with Crosby C, who themselves helped the A team cause by overcoming an again understrength Crosby B 3-7.
Another super double win for Rhys Davies, was again a key factor in the win, and added to this, his inclusion in the Lancashire Under 15 team, along with Daisy Boulton, made it a great week.
They will play in the Premier Division of an eight strong county event at Wellingborough over the weekend of February 11-12.
Getting back to Division One, at the top, Crosby A lead Crosby C, both being 4pts ahead of Crosby B (73pts), but with the A team having matches in hand on both their rivals, favourites they certainly are!
Southport A and Waddington B were involved in a very close match, where neither team had more than a one point lead.
Southport’s number one Miro Veliky with a full quota of wins, being the stand out performance.
We head to Waddington to see how their C team get on against Argyle A.
A late change in the Argyle lineup, captain Mark Jagger leaving himself out, and bringing in Chris Parkes at number one, Mike McCormack also came in for Matthew Hyde. A tactical move? We will have to see. First blood to the visitors, Barry Crook winning in three straight against Nick Foss.
Brian Haslam was up next to face Mike, a game each in the first two, 11-8, 9-11, intriguing contest this, and it continued, very close in the third, 11-13 to Mike.
There was nothing between them really, 11-13 to Mike again in the fourth, it’s 0-2 Argyle. Enter the two number ones Ray Hibbs verses Chris, and Ray needs to be patient, in this one. Why?
Chris just seems to get everything back.
Great work from both players throughout, controlled defence, topspin accuracy, unforced errors, well not that many.
Terrific encounter, 9-11, 9-11, 8-11, to Chris, and yes, he edged it Ray, the visitors lead 0-3.
Could Dave Noden get his side back in it against Paul Lunan?
Strong start from Dave, taking the first 11-7, even better in the second game, 11-4.
Good reply from Paul in the third, subduing Dave’s attack as well as working in his own loop attack, 8-11.
Into the fourth, and much closer again Dave gaining a slight advantage to take it 11-9, it’s 1-3 Argyle.
First doubles pairing of Chris and Mike restored that three point cushion for Argyle, winning in three straight against Ray and Brian, before home pair Dave and Nick won an
