Bride pays tribute to her ‘warrior’ dad
THE terminally-ill father of a bride who was able to be married thanks to the kindness of strangers has lost his fight against cancer.
Alex Atkinson’s dad William was given three to six months to live after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in July last year.
Alex, 29, was willing to have a small wedding in a registry office, so her dad could walk her down the aisle as soon as possible. However, friends decided to set up a go-fund me page to raise cash for the nuptials and with the help of the Visiter lots of people offered their help.
And their generosity meant that Alex was able to marry her sweetheart Carl Davey at St Peter’s church in Birkdale in August, walked down the aisle by her father.
William passed away on Thursday (February 9).
Alex said: “My heart is in pieces and I’ll miss my daddy so much. I’m just grateful that he’s no longer in pain.
“He was such a warrior and strong person, he gave that cancer a good fight and we got longer with him than we thought we would.
“I just wish I could have one more of my big safe strong daddy hugs, from before he was poorly. The reality of knowing that I’m never going to get one again is soul destroying and physically hurts my heart.”
Alex said she is trying to be strong, as it’s what her father would have wanted.
She added: “He’d have wanted me to pick myself up, and to remember him how he was before.”
