Wareing thrilled with ‘bizarre’ Newton blitz

- BY EMMA SANDERS

FLEETWOOD Hesketh recorded one of their biggest victories ever on Saturday when they thrashed Newton-le-Willows.

Hesketh bowled their opponents all out for just 28 runs after producing a solid performance with the bat.

Tommy Wareing and his side notched up a respectable 172-8 before completing the clean sweep in the field.

Understandably, skipper Wareing was over the moon with his side’s performance and he was full of praise for the excellent bowling display.

“It was a bit of a bizarre game to be honest – but obviously in a very good way!” said Wareing.

“It’s not often you bowl a side out for such a low score in just 14 overs but we somehow managed to do it.

“I think they certainly helped us with some of the weak shots they were playing but in the main, it was our bowling which was the difference.

“We were excellent from the start and the guys did superbly. Steve [Gregory] has been brilliant the last few weeks and Jack [Wrigglesworth] was also great.”

With three victories in their last five matches, it’s no surprise that Wareing admitted his side are in good spirits.

They take on recently promoted side Skelmersdale on Sunday and Hesketh are hoping to make it a third consecutive win.

Wareing also believes Hesketh will take advantage of the fact they are playing on their home turf and he is pleased to have a full squad available yet again.

“We’re full of confidence now because it was a great performance on the weekend and we have now had two back-toback wins,” said Wareing.

“We batted first on Saturday too and everyone chipped in for the total. It was a tough day for the batters and we still performed well.

“We have Skem at home this weekend now.

“When we’re at home I feel like we always seem to be able to do well.

“We’ve always enjoyed it there and we know our conditions there better than most other teams so it is an advantage.

“There’s no reason to change the side because nobody is on holiday or injured so hopefully we should have the same team for the sixth game this season.

“There’s such a good spirit in the squad at the moment too so it’s great to have that consistency and long may it continue!”

Wareing doesn’t know what to expect from their opponents but he has urged his team to give it all they have got against Skelmersdale on Sunday.

“Skem came up last year so they are relatively unknown to us.

“I know they lost one of their main players over the winter though,” said Wareing.

“I’m not too sure about their players but we won’t be taking them lightly and we’ll prepare well for the game.

“Sometimes the teams you don’t know much about can cause you the most problems so we’ll be ready for whatever they bring.”
