THE YMCA is to reopen in Southport. The much-loved facility in Hoghton Street, which closed in January, will open again next month, bringing sports and fitness activities back to the site.

The official reopening is to take place from noon on Saturday August 5.

Visitors will be able to enjoy music at the event, as well as opportunities to sign up again with the club.

The club is reopening in conjunction with local sports company, Simply Soccer.

A spokesperson for the YMCA said: “There is a rich history associated with the YMCA in Southport and we know that lots of community members have many fond memories of the time they spent there.

“The YMCA assisted by Simply Soccer want to ensure that we can provide a future as positive as its history and one that plays a key part in the lives of young people, families and the wider community for many years to come.

“In April 2017 YMCA Sefton merged with YMCA Liverpool. The purpose of the merger was to support the YMCA in Southport to grow, develop and better meet the needs of the local community.

“After the merger a number of consultation events took place in order to determine what activities local residents would like to see running at the YMCA building on Hoghton Street.

“The response was overwhelmingly that the focus should be around health, fitness and sporting activities.

“To this end we at the YMCA feel we have found the perfect partner in Simply Soccer and are proud to announce we will be working together to reopen the YMCA in Southport.”

The venue plans to bring back the famous Friday night roller skating disco and all the usual favourite sports and activities such as football, basketball, volleyball and yoga.

New sports have also been added to the schedule, including dodgeball, wheelchair basketball and walking football as well as reopening the gym, the squash courts and a new climbing wall room.

A spokesman for Simply Soccer explained: “It has always been our aim to provide great sporting and coaching facilities for Southport and the surrounding areas.

“Linking up with the YMCA really helps us to achieve this.

“So come on down to the YMCA and have some fun whilst you get fit. Everybody in the community is welcome.”

SIMPLY Soccer is running a Summer Football Camp in Ainsdale in Southport between July 31 and August 4.

Children can enjoy five days of fun for £49.

The organisers are running this in conjunction with Rochdale Football Club.

A spokesman for Simply Soccer told the Visiter: “We will have FA-qualified coaches teaching skills and drills and it will be lots of fun.

“We are taking 10 in each age group, under 8, under 9, under 10 and under 11.

“Rochdale FC will also be using it as a recruitment tool to forge a possible pathway to their development centre.”
