Do you hold the key to WWII history?
DO YOU remember using air raid shelters in Southport during WWII?
This old key to the former air raid shelter in Chester Road is now on display at The Atkinson in Southport - where curators are keen to learnrn more e about the days when local residents took cover to avoid Luftwaffe bombs.
Atkinson collections development officer Jo Chamberlain said: “I have just had a lovely donation from a gentleman by the name of Martyn Griffiths.
“It is a small rusty key with an attached fob that reads ‘Street Shelter, Chester Road’ and is believed to have come from an air raid shelter that would have been situated on Chester Road.
“He came across it when he was clearing the eff effects of a Mr Hukin and Martyn th thinks he was the key hol holder.
“I have put it on display in the hope t that somebody may remember the shelter or indeed has any memories of using any of the local air raid shelters during WWII.”
