PURPLE skies above Southport and Formby have left people wondering what the cause might be

People have reported seeing a purple sky at night above locations around the area.

One Visiter reader, Shaun Pearse-Murphy, said that he and other members of his family saw the sky lit up purple above fields between Birkdale and Ainsdale.

He said: “I don’t know how far they are, but they’re above the ground. The only logical explana- tion is that it’s northern lights. Very strange.”

Charles Stuart captured images where purple strobes of light could clearly be seen at night.

The Met Office has previously responded to colour-changing skies in other parts of the UK stat- ing that the cause is related to high pressure in the atmosphere.
