Firth’s S&B go into new season without warm up
FOR the first time in their recent history Southport and Birkdale’s cricketers will begin their league season without having played a single warm-up match.
The inter-club practice game arranged for Saturday was cancelled because of the condition of the Trafalgar Road square and outfield, meaning that Chris Firth’s cricketers will go into their match against Wigan at Haydock on Saturday having had no practice on grass.
The consolation is that most other clubs in the Liverpool Gin Liverpool Competition are in the same situation after the cold weather and rain in the early weeks of spring put back groundsmen’s preparations by weeks.
But it has meant that selecting the side to play Wigan has been more testing than ever at this stage of the season.
A 13-man squad has been named with the final eleven being chosen at the club’s selection meeting. The squad is as follows: Firth, Yates, Byrne, Burton, Cunningham, Gailey, Hine, Keedy, Lea, May, Phillips, Trimboli, Warhurst.
In the following weeks S&B’s first team fixtures are as follows: April 28: Prestatyn (A), May 5: Sefton Park (H), May 12: Newton-leWillows (H).
