David Barton represented Dukes Ward for four years after being elected in May 2014 but left his role on the local authority for “personal reasons”.

The former Conservative and independent councillor said that although personal reasons had prevented him standing for re-election this time he fully intended to stand in the local elections again in the future.

He said he had been overwhelmed by messages of support from local people who were grateful for the work he had done.

Mr Barton said: “With the support of the local community we have been able to achieve a great deal for the benefit of the people of Dukes Ward and the town as a whole.

“It is my intention to continue using my experience and contacts to support residents and the wider Southport community and to work with them for the benefit of the town as a whole.”
