THE annual air show has been hailed as “something Southport should be proud of” by attendees.

Thousands of people from all over the country flocked to our seaside town to watch the threeday event last weekend.

The 2018 event saw an exciting return from the Red Arrows on Friday evening, after they were greatly missed at last year’s event.

Over the three days, crowds who flocked to the beach in sweltering heat witnessed displays by aircraft from several eras – including the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, the Bristol Blenheim, the Blades aerobatic team, Tigers Army Parachute Display Team, OTTO the Helicopter and the P-51 Mustang. as they flew over the town.

Pilots Paul Bonhomme and Steve Jones also displayed the Spitfire pair.

Many people took to social media to give their verdict.

Vincent Furber said: “I went to the air show on Saturday with the family, this is the second time of attending, on both occasions it was a very enjoyable experience. It is always very clean and well run, something Southport should be proud of.”

Rachel Wilson commented: “Fantastic day out, well organised and adequate facilities.

“Brilliant commentary throughout and Sunday’s line up was non-stop and kept my family interested.”

Lesley Glaister said: “Had an amazing day at the air show, and planning a long weekend next year so I can go Friday to Sunday.”

Mark Wright attended all three days of the show, and claims it was “an excellent weekend.”

He said: “The weather was fantastic, flying programme rolled well, Friday night with the Red Arrows was a great start.

“Ending with a stunning display from the Typhoon was the perfect end to family fun weekend on the sea front!

“It’s my favourite event of the year, sad it’s over, but counting down the days to the next.”

Large crowds attending the event, organised by Sefton Council, also enjoyed the Air Show Village – which consisted of stalls selling an eclectic mix of gifts, sweets, models, military clothing and official merchandise.

The annual show closed on Sunday evening with a performance from the Typhoon.

Cllr Marion Atkinson, Sefton Council’s Labour cabinet member for regeneration and skills, said: “Yet again the Southport Air Show proved to be an amazing weekend for all.

“Bumper crowds enjoyed incredible aerial and ground spectacles throughout all three days and the weather was near perfect. Friday night in particular was a fantastic evening with the world famous Red Arrows, fireworks, artillery and LED aerial displays.

“Thousands of people flocked to Southport and Sefton over the weekend, which will have had a real positive impact on local businesses in and around the town.

“We are already looking forward to the British Musical Fireworks in September.”
