SKELMERSDALE United boss Dave Powell has warned his players to ‘wake up’ or face losing their starting berth after losing their opening two games of the campaign.

United - who finished secondbottom last year - started the new term with a 4-0 home defeat to Leek Town after conceding three goals in the opening 11 minutes.

Dan Trickett-Smith made it four with half-an-hour remaining as Skelmersdale were reduced to nine men following the dismissals of Callum Woods and Connor Belger.

“We’ve got to start games better. We were poor for the first 25-30 minutes. We were off men, not tracking runners, defending poorly,” Powell assessed afterwards.

“We know how to defend - we just didn’t apply ourselves. The lads know it. They’re not stupid players - they just underperformed. It was a bad day at the office.”

Woods’ dismissal came after just 20 minutes and effectively ended any hopes of a spirited comeback.
