RES­I­DENTS of South­port and Formby will have seven-day ac­cess to GP ap­point­ments for the first time from Mon­day.

Those reg­is­tered to any surgery in South­port or Formby can also book ap­point­ments un­til 8pm on week­days un­der the new sys­tem, be­ing launched by the GPs’ fed­er­a­tion known as South­port and Formby Health.

Pa­tients will be able to book into the seven-day ac­cess ap­point­ments by con­tact­ing re­cep­tion at their own GP surgery. The ex­tended hours ser­vice is de­signed to repli­cate a nor­mal GP ser­vice, mean­ing pa­tients can also book ap­point­ments with nurses, phys­io­ther­a­pists and health care as­sis­tants.

Ex­tended hours are de­signed to give more flex­i­bil­ity to pa­tients, as well as eas­ing pres­sure on GP surg­eries.

Med­i­cal direc­tor for South­port and Formby Health, Dr Ab­dul Zubairu, said: “This is a na­tional pol­icy which means the CCG has a lo­cal man­date to of­fer seven-day ac­cess for all pa­tients from South­port and Formby.

“Other ar­eas have al­ready started do­ing this for a cou­ple of years now, so South­port and Formby has been a lit­tle be­hind the curve.

“The ben­e­fit for pa­tients are bet­ter ac­cess to doc­tors, nurses and health care as­sis­tants, at more ac­ces­si­ble times around work com­mit­ments.”

The ser­vice is de­signed to op­er­ate 365 days a year, mean­ing GPs will also be avail­able on Bank Hol­i­days and Christ­mas Day.

Seven-day ac­cess hours are for any­one from any surgery and are avail­able 5-8pm on week­ends and 9am-12pm on week­ends.

Those ap­point­ments will not be at pa­tients’ usual prac­tice, but in­stead at the Fam­ily Surgery on Liver­pool Road, Birk­dale.

Doc­tors will now be avail­able for ap­point­ments on seven days a week
