Where has all the banned booze gone?

DESPITE alcohol being banned on Sefton’s beaches, visitors continue to take beer, wine and cider when they head to the coast – but what happens to those drinks?

With police on hand to monitor anti-social behaviour around Formby and Ainsdale last week, hundreds of drinks were taken off those who came out to enjoy the sun.

Reminding others of the rules, which were introduced in 2018, the force shared pictures on social media of the boots of police cars filled with drinks and disposable barbecues.

In response, people joked about the force’s Christmas party being well supplied, but the reality is rather different.

When asked by the Visiter, a police spokesman explained that drinks were not confiscated by officers, but people were given the choice to take them back to their cars or surrender them in a process similar to what happens outside football matches and major events.

And the majority chose to give up the goods rather than return.

And once back at the station, the drinks are not saved or given away but instead poured away.
