Psychic ability – is it hereditary? P

sychic gifts can be passed down through families but I find they often jump a generation or two,’ says medium Avril Price. ‘Most people I’ve spoken to who are psychic have a grandparent or great grandparent who was or is psychic. That was certainly the case with me. My great grandmother Lizzie read tea leaves and did card readings for the local community.’

It also seems psychic gifts are more commonly inherited through the female side of the family, although folklore tells of the psychic powers held by seventh sons of the seventh sons. ‘I believe the concept comes from Celtic and European folklore,’ says Avril. ‘But I’ve only met two people who are seventh children. Both were women, and both were psychic!’

Doctor Helane Wahbeh of the Institute of Noetic Sciences also believes psychic gifts are hereditary.

'There are many stories about these abilities running in families,' she says. 'I feel they likely are, considering I come from a long line of channels in my family.

'That being said, there is little scientific evidence that this is true, because it hasn't been studied. Although, at the institute we are currently conducting a study to analyse if there is a genetic component to these psychic skills.'

Avril, however, believes psychic abilities can be learnt too. ‘It can be a case of nature and nurture. For instance, Lizzie taught my grandfather, Harry, to do card readings and use his intuition. But he wasn’t gifted in the same way she was, he just saw it as a bit of fun.'
