WHERE IS IT?

Off the cen­tral east­ern coast, in the Gulf of Thai­land.

HOW TO GET THERE

Fly to Koh Sa­mui, Thai­land from Bangkok, Sin­ga­pore and other SE Asian cities, then take a fast ferry to Koh Tao.

WHEN TO GO

Div­ing is good year-round, with the best weather March-septem­ber (the most whale­shark sight­ings are in Septem­ber). More wind and rain de­velop in Oc­to­ber and can be present through Fe­bru­ary.

EN­TRY RE­QUIRE­MENTS

A valid pass­port with six months be­fore expiry is all you need.

CUR­RENCY

Thai Baht (£1= 43 THB). How­ever, in­ter­na­tional credit cards are widely used.

WHERE TO EAT AND MEET

For food, Porta Bello Ital­ian res­tau­rant was my fa­vorite, with the Hippo Bar and Grill a close sec­ond. For après-dive meet-ups, the monthly on-the-beach Full Moon Party (of course), with the Sairee Cot­tage pool bar the most pop­u­lar with re­sort guests night to night (though there are too many oth­ers to name!).
