Take note, Donald...

Sport Diver - - Editor’sletter - Will Harrison, DEPUTY EDITOR

It’s unlikely Donald Trump is a scuba diver. While his presidential campaign may well be performing a certain type of dive, I’m inclined to think that the need to rely on another person’s expertise (namely an instructor) in order to venture beneath the waves, would sit at odds with the man’s epic narcissism. As such, I doubt he’s done his Open Water. Shame really, because if he had, we could have extended an invite his way to the annual Sport Diver Awards... Ahem. Not only would he have had a fantastic evening getting to know the UK diving industry and community, he would have likely learned a thing or two. As mentioned, The Donald doesn’t do humility, and there was plenty of it on show at the Awards. While fiercely contested (and celebrated), it’s always great to see rival companies supporting one another’s victories, as was the case on many occasions at the Awards ceremony this year. Ultimately, an active, engaged and voting public is good news for all - win or lose. It’s unlikely the same grace will be shown when the presidential election results are announced in the US on 8 November. For the full lowdown on the Sport Diver Awards evening, as well as a list of all the finalists and winners, head to p.36. And put the Saturday of next year’s Dive Show in the diary. Finally, a big thank you to all of you who voted, and congratulations to Polly Snape on winning the $3,000 Wakatobi Dive Resort raffle.

As well as the Awards write-up, there’s plenty in this month’s issue to keep your attention away from the political disaster across the pond - Jason Brown dives an airplane wreck in Malta and is captivated by its fascinating history (p.22), Gill Mcdonald gives an insider’s perspective on the delights of Indonesia’s Bunaken Marine Park (p.40), and Al Hornsby enjoys the magic of the Maldives (p.56) - but the highlight of this issue, for me at least, is Andy Torbet’s account of his Bbc-backed expedition to dive the Britannic (p.100), the sister ship of the more-famous Titanic. It’s a tale that includes diving bells, extreme current and submarines, and it’ll have you fixated throughout. So you best go put the kettle on...
