LEADING THE WAY
It’s official; winter 2016/17 is going to be a landmark period for diver achievement! For the third month running, we have a full rowing crew of PADI Master Scuba Divers to congratulate - and these are just the folk whose names I can publish! • Michael Armstrong, Consett, County Durham • Emma Coombe, Redruth, Cornwall • Max Drakely, Didsbury, Manchester • Amy Leyland, Sneyd Park, Bristol • Karen Neild, Blackburn, Lancashire • Cory Pycroft, Kenilworth, Cape Town, South Africa • Jill Turner, Orpington, Kent • Warren Rockley, Stoke-on-trent, Staffordshire We also have more inspiring tales of achievement in the face of adversity! Joe Rees-beddington turned to diving after two knee operations curtailed his promising rugby career; sailing through his PADI OW programme in August 2016, he made it all the way to Rescue Diver (with Deep and Wreck specs along the way) before October, and returned to Dawn Diving, Malta again in December to complete more specialties to earn PADI’S highest nonprofessional cert. In 2017 Joe will join Dawn Divers once again, as a PADI DM candidate. Rounding off this column nicely, we recognise also Scott Corrigan and, in particular, his Staffordshire buddy Simon Powell, who gained their PADI MSD in October and December 2016. Simon’s achievement was delayed, however, following a cancer diagnosis; despite this stress, and undergoing some very painful treatment, he has remained positive is determined to be back in the water sometime in 2017.
