News Corporation, the international media giant owned by Rupert Murdoch, agreed to take full control of ESPN Star Sports, the panAsian sports broadcaster that is a joint venture between News Corp and US sports broadcaster ESPN, as a result of a long-anticipated deal. Subject to regulatory approval, News Corp will buy ESPN’s 50-per-cent stake in the broadcaster for an undisclosed amount and assume ownership of its wide range of sports rights, including top international cricket, and production facilities based in Singapore. Peter Hutton, previously senior vice president of sports at News Corp’s Fox International Channels, was appointed to take over as managing director of ESPN Star Sports, succeeding Manu Sawhney, who joined the company when the joint venture launched in 1996 and had held the top position since 2007.
