At The Races, the UK-based horse racing channel, and SIS, the broadcast production firm, retained rights to horse racing in Ireland after signing a new three-year deal. The agreement with Horse Racing Ireland, the sport’s governing body in Ireland, and the Association of Irish Racecourses, the body that represents the 26 horse racecourse owners in Ireland, runs from 2014 to 2016. At The Races will have exclusive worldwide multi-platform rights to all Irish fixtures, although excluding rights for licensed betting offices, while SIS retained all domestic and international betting shop rights.
Channel 4, the UK free-to-air commercial broadcaster, completed a three-year deal to show the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, French horse racing’s most prestigious event. The deal for live coverage of the 2013 race and beyond came after Channel 4 and other leading UK free-to-air broadcasters decided against picking up the rights to last year’s race. However, following the deal with rights-holder France Galop, the French horse racing governing body, Channel 4 is not only showing the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, but also a selection of support races from Longchamp on October 6. Channel 4 last broadcast France’s top race in 2001 and the event has traditionally been shown by the BBC, the public-service broadcaster which last year lost its remaining UK horse racing rights from 2013 to 2016 to Channel 4.
