Buzz off to buzzards?
Q I operate Larsen traps for magpies and a ladder trap for crows on the family farm. This year buzzards have moved in for the first time and I have trapped three of them. Each has been carefully removed, and released on site, but two of them – both tagged – have now been caught twice. Is it legal for me to box future captives, drive 20 miles up the road, and release them there, unharmed?
A David says: Firstly I suggest you look at where and how you are setting the Larsen and ladder traps to see if you can reduce the likelihood of catching a buzzard. It would not be lawful to box buzzards and release them elsewhere unless you had a licence from Natural England or its Welsh and Scottish equivalents.
