This is my 11-year-old grandson, Alfie, who shot his first pheasant on a walked-up day in Norfolk. With him is his two and a half-year-old Lab who flushed and retrieved it. We had already agreed just to shoot cocks as the wild bird population here in Norfolk was decimated by a cold and wet early June and not many chicks survived. Although a few survived from a second hatching, this cold and wet weather seems to occur just in those first crucial weeks of June and has done so for the last couple of years, so here’s to a better year this year; fingers crossed.
