Old-fashioned fun

Sporting Shooter - - Letters -

We have a good friend who has a small farm and a son and daughter of similar ages to my own (10 and 14). My son has been beating this last season and is keen to get into shooting. So the farmer and I decided to introduce the juniors with a bit of a homemade straw bale shoot in the bottom field, along with some of the old-timers in the family who have been shooting for years.

Setting it up was great fun, with all hands on deck and the old 1960s Massey Ferguson pressed into service. We only had one manual trap at our disposal so devising the different targets was an exercise in lateral thinking.

Getting the kids to make a few shots and bust a few clays was really excellent but seeing their enthusiasm for tidying up, collecting up the unbroken clays and generally mucking in was uplifting. If only we could get them to be that keen on tidying bedrooms and doing homework…
