QI’ve read that too much water work can make my dog ill. Is this true?
AVICKY PAYNE replies: Dogs that do a lot of retrieving from water are at risk of water intoxication if they swallow too much water while swimming, although cases are rare.
Initial symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, lethargy and abdominal distention. In more severe cases, coma, seizures, hypothermia and a low heart rate may occur. Treatment can be difficult and some dogs will die.
