This month’s round-up provides you with some all-weather gear from jackets to socks – as well as some game-changing gadgets
Now that the game season has properly started, it seems a good time to feature this beautiful pair of classic wool-rich shooting socks from HJ Hall, perfect for days in the field.
When I was sent these particular socks for testing, it was mid-July and topping 30° most days – not ideal conditions for wrapping your feet and legs in premium woollen wear! So, dedicated as I am to conducting thorough and trustworthy product tests, I came up with an idea… a good friend of mine quite literally works her socks off every day on a horse yard (honestly, most last her about a week before falling apart), and since she has to suffer in long socks no matter the weather, I handed her these mustard beauties and asked her to abuse the hell out of them and report back.
She did an admirable job. They were returned a couple of months later (looking and smelling slightly worse for wear), with bits of hay and god knows what else worked into the knit, but very importantly, not one single hole! They stood up to the absolute horrors of two months’ worth of 11-hour days spent running, riding and stuffing sweaty feet in and out of wellies and riding boots. They also probably got stomped on several times by hefty horses in the process – she didn’t say, but this type of minor inconvenience isn’t worth a mention for a girl who thinks nothing of being fired at high speed into solid obstacles on a daily basis.
Anyway, she also told me that they were very comfortable and did not make her feet sweat excessively. Top marks for durability and function in the harshest of test conditions. As you can see, they also look the part with a nice patterned turnover top – ideal for smart shooting days or just for wearing under wellies!
