Jurassic larks put Paultons Park up with the theme park giants
Took his family to Paultons Park and discovered the Lost Kingdom of the dinosaurs
PAULTONS Park will be pure dino-mite this year thanks to its new Jurassic-themed Lost Kingdom rides.
The Hampshire theme park may not always be mentioned in the same breath nationally as Alton Towers, Thorpe Park and Chessington, but that may all about to change, with two new world-class rollercoasters opening this week.
Perhaps best known in the past for its child-friendly Peppa Pig World, whiteknuckle ride fans still had plenty to enjoy at Paultons, but the new Velociraptor and Flight of the Pterosaur coasters takes it to a whole new level.
The Pterosur ride, a suspended coaster that swoops thrill-seekers over model dinosaurs and much of the Lost Kingdom area is the most fun of the new additions, much like (although a lot faster than) the Vampire ride at Chessington. The breathtaking Velociraptor is quite unique in that you start at a great height before plummeting and racing around a short track, then stopping at an incline and rushing in reverse back to the start.
These rides are immense fun for older visitors, but there are a few other attractions in the Lost Kingdom more suitable for younger ones. The Dinosaur Tour Co takes the family on a Jeep ride through a land similar to Jurassic Park, while Dino Chase offers a more sedate rollercoaster experience for the family.
You can also encounter one of the ‘tame-ish’ dinosaurs and even get a selfie with one – a great souvenir from the day.
The Lost Kingdom rides are bound to be a big pull for Paultons visitors for years to come, but there is plenty to enjoy throughout the park.
For thrill fans, the Cobra rollercoaster, spinning Edge ride and Raging River log flume are some of the most popular (and our favourites).
The go karts are also exhilarating but cost £3.50 per kart extra on top of the entrance free. And, of course, there must be a mention for Paultons’ ever-popular Peppa Pig World section.
My children were a little bit old to appreciate the area this time (although a few years ago we couldn’t prise them away), but any little one into Peppa (who isn’t?) will love it, with the added opportunity to meet the characters and travel around the sights by train, car and even helicopter.
But it is the Lost Kingdom that will be the main attraction this year, putting Paultons Park in with the theme park big boys. n For more information see www.paultonspark.

The Flight of the Pterosaur is the most fun of the new additions to the park.
I’d like to m-eat you: The Velociraptor ride sees you plummet from a great height over this friendly creature’s cage. Best hold on tight.
Jeep at the price: Taking a Jeep ride through the Lost Kingdom is a more sedate way of seeing the attractions.
The high life: You never know who you’ll meet in Paultons Park.
