Teen is ice dance champion

AN Egham teenager who was in­spired to start ice skat­ing af­ter watch­ing ITV’s Danc­ing on Ice with his mum has been crowned a na­tional champion.

James Rig­den, 17, be­came the Men’s Bri­tish Solo Ice Dance Champion at the Bri­tish Solo Ice Dance Cham­pi­onships 2016 Sh­effield on June 25.

The for­mer Magna Carta School pupil com­pleted two dance pro­grammes to wow judges at the Na­tional Ice Skat­ing As­so­ci­a­tion of Great Britain & North­ern Ire­land (NISA) event.

The teenager be­gan fig­ure in skat­ing in April 2008.

He has since worked his way up through the 10 Skate UK train­ing lev­els to com­plete his bronze, sil­ver and gold lev­els in sin­gles skat­ing, ice danc­ing and syn­chro­nised team skat­ing, be­fore mov­ing onto ad­vanced NISA lev­els.
