Ashford lose by a head as Ealing win a thriller
THEY gave it their best shot but Ashford’s star line-up narrowly missed reaching the final of the Middlesex Fours.
Ron Searle, Ashley Tanner, Rob Hackwell and Matt Larman agonisingly lost out to Ealing outfit Brentham, with the last wood of a close contest.
Leading up to the semi, they had wins against Masonions and Winnington, before a quarter-final with Harrow.
Meanwhile, in the fifth round of the Middlesex pairs, Ashley Tanner and Rob Hackwell lost by six shots to English international Simon Jee and partner John Goddard, from Parsons Green.
In the same round, Searle and Matt Larman won by 10 shots at Sunbury but in the sixth round they lost by four shots.
There was no luck either for Tanner, Hackwell and Larman in the fifth round of the Middlesex Triples as they went down by a single shot to Winnington.
Best win of the week for Ashford was Ashley Tanner’s second-round success in the Bowls England Champion of Champions competition as he beat former national title holder Dave Pitt from Masonions 21-17. He plays at Reading next.
Mick Delaney and Don Pope won 21-7 in the second round of the prestigious Uxbridge Pairs, Delaney saying after the match he had felt blessed playing with Pope.
There was another win in the London & Southern Pairs as Hackwell and Larman teamed up to beat Egham’s Tony Goucher and Garry Clark, 21-15.
Ashford thumped Iver Heath in the Double Fours by 45-30. The home rink of John Gammon, Searle, Keith Robinson and Hackwell had the biggest margin of victory, forging out a 27-13 win.
The away rink of Dave and Terry Law, Bill Moody and Larman edged their clash 1817. In the Richmond & Barnes League, Ashford beat Hampton 61-43.
Larman and Hackwell were in the victorious Middlesex Middleton Cup side which scored a resounding 20-2 victory on the Isle of Wight.
Now the club is looking forward to the weekend of July 30/31 at Woodthorpe Road. On the Saturday they host Liz Dutton’s (Middlesex Ladies) Presidents Day from midday while the following day sees the club stage the Middlesex Men’s Country Finals Day for the first time in their history, the action starting at 10am.
Think tank: Ashford’s Rob Hackwell, Ron Searle and Ashley Tanner.
