Ash­ford lose by a head as Eal­ing win a thriller

THEY gave it their best shot but Ash­ford’s star line-up nar­rowly missed reach­ing the fi­nal of the Mid­dle­sex Fours.

Ron Searle, Ash­ley Tan­ner, Rob Hack­well and Matt Lar­man ag­o­nis­ingly lost out to Eal­ing out­fit Bren­tham, with the last wood of a close con­test.

Lead­ing up to the semi, they had wins against Ma­so­nions and Win­ning­ton, be­fore a quar­ter-fi­nal with Har­row.

Mean­while, in the fifth round of the Mid­dle­sex pairs, Ash­ley Tan­ner and Rob Hack­well lost by six shots to English international Si­mon Jee and part­ner John God­dard, from Par­sons Green.

In the same round, Searle and Matt Lar­man won by 10 shots at Sunbury but in the sixth round they lost by four shots.

There was no luck ei­ther for Tan­ner, Hack­well and Lar­man in the fifth round of the Mid­dle­sex Triples as they went down by a sin­gle shot to Win­ning­ton.

Best win of the week for Ash­ford was Ash­ley Tan­ner’s sec­ond-round suc­cess in the Bowls Eng­land Cham­pion of Cham­pi­ons com­pe­ti­tion as he beat for­mer na­tional ti­tle holder Dave Pitt from Ma­so­nions 21-17. He plays at Read­ing next.

Mick De­laney and Don Pope won 21-7 in the sec­ond round of the pres­ti­gious Uxbridge Pairs, De­laney say­ing af­ter the match he had felt blessed play­ing with Pope.

There was an­other win in the Lon­don & South­ern Pairs as Hack­well and Lar­man teamed up to beat Egham’s Tony Goucher and Garry Clark, 21-15.

Ash­ford thumped Iver Heath in the Dou­ble Fours by 45-30. The home rink of John Gam­mon, Searle, Keith Robin­son and Hack­well had the big­gest mar­gin of vic­tory, forg­ing out a 27-13 win.

The away rink of Dave and Terry Law, Bill Moody and Lar­man edged their clash 1817. In the Rich­mond & Barnes League, Ash­ford beat Hamp­ton 61-43.

Lar­man and Hack­well were in the vic­to­ri­ous Mid­dle­sex Mid­dle­ton Cup side which scored a re­sound­ing 20-2 vic­tory on the Isle of Wight.

Now the club is look­ing for­ward to the week­end of July 30/31 at Woodthorpe Road. On the Satur­day they host Liz Dut­ton’s (Mid­dle­sex Ladies) Pres­i­dents Day from midday while the fol­low­ing day sees the club stage the Mid­dle­sex Men’s Coun­try Fi­nals Day for the first time in their his­tory, the ac­tion start­ing at 10am.
