Pearl’s a winner – great- grandmother eyes up regional opticians accolade
Pearl Stockham, 90, is a regional finalist in Specsavers’ Spectacle Wearer of the Year contest.
The great- grandmother of two was selected in the South East region’s over- 60s age category, receiving vouchers worth £ 150 and a bottle of Champagne.
Mrs Stockham was encouraged to enter the competition by staff at Specsavers in Aldershot, who noticed her ‘ youthful looks and zest for life’.
Store director Manish Soni, said: “Pearl has been a loyal customer here for more than 30 years and we are delighted for her.
“We wish her all the best for the next stage of judging.”
Mrs Stockham, a resident at Kingsley Court retirement complex in the town, was a Second World War evacuee as a child and worked at the telephone exchange for 25 years.
Her roots with Aldershot stem from her parents’ military careers.
Her father was a solider and her mother was in the Auxiliary Territorial Service ( ATS).
Her family moved to Aldershot after the war and, after spells in Exeter and Barnstable, she decided to return to the town when she retired.
“When I received the call to say I was a regional finalist, I thought it was a prank and my daughter was in hysterics when told her,” she said.
“Even if I don’t win the final prize it has been a great experience and I had a lovely day meeting the Aldershot team for my photoshoot and collecting my prizes.”
The chain’s competition has been running for 22 years and every entry raises £ 1 for the anti- bullying children’s charity Kidscape.
Nearly £ 15,000 has been raised for the charity. The awards ceremony will be held in London in October.
