Young sup­port­ers needed for Stanier ‘Mogul’

It has al­ready planned well ahead to en­sure the fi­nan­cial fu­ture of its unique LMS 2-6-0 - and now the Stanier Mogul Fund is look­ing to se­cure its next gen­er­a­tion of sup­port­ers with the launch of a young mem­bers’ scheme. Any­one un­der the age of 30 can ap­ply to join for just £10 by pur­chas­ing a ‘First of the Finest’ cer­tifi­cate. Mem­bers will re­ceive in­cen­tives such as sub­sidised travel on the fund’s spe­cial trains, and en­try into an an­nual prize draw for foot­plate ex­pe­ri­ences. When they reach 30 years of age, mem­bers will be in­vited to take up full life mem­ber­ship for a monthly stand­ing or­der of as lit­tle as £2. The 83-year-old Stanier ‘Mogul’ is un­der­go­ing its third ‘heavy gen­eral’ in preser­va­tion at the Sev­ern Val­ley Rail­way, where it is ex­pected to re-en­ter ser­vice in 2018 - car­ry­ing its orig­i­nal 1934 LMS guise as No. 13268 for the first time in preser­va­tion. Con­tin­ued dis­man­tling of the lo­co­mo­tive at Bridgnorth works has in­volved re­moval of the cab, pony truck and brake gear, while con­struc­tion of the new rear drag­box has com­menced and new valve chest lin­ers have been in­stalled. In the boiler shop, the fire­box foun­da­tion ring has been re­moved, along with most of the stays.
