2018: a ‘Great’ Western year
Alongside the opening of the new Corwen station, 2018 looks set to be a bumper year for GWR steam at the Llangollen Railway. As well as pannier tank No. 7754 (see main story), 2018 is the target steaming date for a locomotive that will fill one of the most significant gaps in Great Western preservation - new ‘Grange’ 4-6-0 No. 6880 Betton Grange (see Newbuild News). In addition, as reported in SR456, the Llangollen Great Western Locomotive Group has pinpointed 2018 as an appropriate time to complete the restoration of its ex-Barry ‘Small Prairie’ No. 5532, which will turn 90 that year. However, this will only happen if its £150,000 appeal to overhaul the boiler is successful: for details, or to make a donation, write to Llangollen Railway GW Locomotive Group, 21 Allanson Road, Colwyn Bay, LL28 4HN, or visit www. llangollengwloco.co.uk At least three Swindon products should be available from the current working fleet - ‘Large Prairie’ No. 5199, ‘64XX’ 0-6-0PT No. 6430 and ‘Manor’ No. 7822 Foxcote Manor - while ‘2884’ 2-8-0 No. 3802 is undergoing its ‘ten-yearly’ overhaul and could steam in 2017. From the LMS stable, 2018 should be the year in which ‘Patriot’ No. 5551 The Unknown Warrior is outshopped from the works of Llangollen Engineering (see New-build News).
