Correct chimney for LNWR 4-4-0

-

LNWR ‘George V’ No. 2013 Prince George will soon have the first of its two chimneys, following historical research to confirm the dimensions. As detailed in SR464, the LNWR George V Steam Locomotive Trust is to have two chimneys cast for its Bowen-Cooke 4-4-0 - one within Network Rail’s current loading gauge for main line operation, and one to the original design for preserved railway use - but, said Trustee Paul Hibberd: “The general arrangement drawing showed a different profile to the drawings in the book LNWR Portrayed, so we needed to check drawings in the NRM.” The full-height chimney will be produced first, to the Whale design fitted to the ‘George Vs’ from new although, adds Mr Hibberd: “It seems that at subsequent overhauls Crewe Works may have put on whatever chimney was to hand!” A presentation on the project will be held at Kidderminster Railway Museum on July 29, with Gauge 1 models - hopefully including a ‘George V’.
