RAIS­ING THE STAN­DARD AT SPA VAL­LEY’S 20th BASH

A vis­it­ing BR Stan­dard 2-6-4T was the star of a South­ern Re­gion gath­er­ing to mark the Spa Val­ley Rail­way’s (SVR) 20th an­niver­sary on Au­gust 26-28. On Au­gust 27, a ‘South­ern Day’ fea­tured re­cently over­hauled No. 80078 run­ning along­side Class 33 diesel No. 33201 and ‘Thumper’ DEMU No. 1317, rep­re­sent­ing mo­tive power on the Tun­bridge Wells-Eridge line through­out its BR his­tory. The event marked 20 years since the SVR be­came a ‘some­where to some­where’ rail­way with the open­ing of its ex­ten­sion to Groom­bridge on Au­gust 23 1997. It be­gan a short push-pull op­er­a­tion at Tun­bridge Wells West in De­cem­ber 1996.

Br ‘4mt’ 2‑6‑4t No. 80078 sits in eridge sta­tion dur­ing sVr’s 20th an­niver­sary gala on au­gust 27. It was the first mem­ber of its class to be seen here since Br days; when it pre­vi­ously vis­ited the sVr in 2004, the rail­way ran only to groom­bridge.
