RAISING THE STANDARD AT SPA VALLEY’S 20th BASH
A visiting BR Standard 2-6-4T was the star of a Southern Region gathering to mark the Spa Valley Railway’s (SVR) 20th anniversary on August 26-28. On August 27, a ‘Southern Day’ featured recently overhauled No. 80078 running alongside Class 33 diesel No. 33201 and ‘Thumper’ DEMU No. 1317, representing motive power on the Tunbridge Wells-Eridge line throughout its BR history. The event marked 20 years since the SVR became a ‘somewhere to somewhere’ railway with the opening of its extension to Groombridge on August 23 1997. It began a short push-pull operation at Tunbridge Wells West in December 1996.
Br ‘4mt’ 2‑6‑4t No. 80078 sits in eridge station during sVr’s 20th anniversary gala on august 27. It was the first member of its class to be seen here since Br days; when it previously visited the sVr in 2004, the railway ran only to groombridge.
