MID-NORFOLK LAYS DOUBLE TRACK
Double track has reappeared at the Mid‑Norfolk Railway in a training exercise for Network Rail contractors. Just over 400 yards of the Down line on Danemoor Bank, south of Hardingham, has been relaid in a partnership with Balfour Beatty and London Underground. It is intended to give junior engineers experience of all stages in railway construction, from initial surveys, through design, to final installation. The re‑laying of the Down line ‑ lifted when the Dereham‑ Wymondham line was singled in 1965 ‑ was needed because the Up line has to be taken out of use for replacement, having already had a 20mph speed restriction imposed. However, the railway needs to raise £30,000 by the winter in order to lay a further 273 yards of track and connect the new alignment to the existing running line.
