Mahatma Gandhi, the pacifist Indian leader who campaigned for independence from Britain, was assassinated on January 30 1948 by Nathuram Godse – a Hindu fanatic. Nearly one million people followed Gandhi’s funeral procession as his body was carried through the streets of Delhi, where he would be cremated on the banks of the holy Jumna River.
