‘S&C’ trio for 50th anniverSary

Steam Railway (UK) - - Down Main -

Ais Gill is looking increasingly crowded for August 11 with no fewer than three trains running, 50 years since the end of main line steam. As of March, the line-up is now the Railway Touring Company’s commemorative ‘CME’ and ‘Waverley’, as well as Pathfinder’s Tornado tour (SR475). There’s a variety of possible start points and routes – with the ‘A1’ doing Shap northbound/Settle-Carlisle southbound (steam on at Preston, with the train starting from Bristol), while the ‘Waverley’ is on its regular York-Carlisle route. The ‘CME’ starts from Euston (steam from Carnforth, outbound via Shap and back over the ‘Long Drag’). Time to head for the hills? Well, yes, unless you want to spend the anniversary day with ‘1T57’ star Oliver Cromwell. It’s now ten years since No. 70013 returned to steam, and following its final main line trip of this ‘ticket’ on March 3 (see News), the ‘Brit’ is expected to be running at the Great Central Railway.
