On April 3, President of the United States Harry S. Truman authorises the Marshall Plan. Otherwise known as the European Recovery Program, the plan granted over $13 billion to help Western European countries rebuild their economies after the Second World War. Britain was the largest single recipient, receiving over a quarter of the money. A few days after the authorisation of the Marshall Plan, the United Nations established the World Health Organisation on April 7.
