TWENTY HUNSLETS ASSEMBLE FOR FFESTINIOG’S GREAT GATHERING
A total of 20 Hunslet locomotives from ten railways will attend the Ffestiniog Railway’s ‘Hunslet 125’ event on June 22-24. With 17 of the Leeds firm’s famed ‘Quarry Hunslet’ 0-4-0STs confirmed for the event, which celebrates the 125th anniversary of the Ffestiniog’s 2-4-0STTs Linda and Blanche, ‘Hunslet 125’ will mark the biggest ever number of the slate quarry engines on the Ffestiniog Railway in the line’s history. Of all the locomotives attending the event, only three are not ‘Quarry Hunslets’ – former War Department Light Railways 4-6-0T No. 1215 (which will be making its public debut at the event), 1971-built 0-4-2ST Trangkil No. 4 (the last steam locomotive built in Britain for commercial use) and Toddington-based 0-4-2T Chaka’s Kraal No. 6. Only one locomotive in the line-up will not be operational – Launceston Steam Railway ‘Quarry Hunslet’ Velinheli, which has been dispatched to the Ffestiniog for a new boiler (see Narrow Gauge News, p37).
