Binos miss out on chance to create club history

- David Ogilvie

Clyde ............................. 1 Stirling Albion .............. 1 Stirling’s hopes of equalling their club record of seven successive away wins were dashed in the closing stages at Broadwood on Saturday.

Top scorer Darren Smith put them ahead with just 12 minutes left but a controversial penalty, converted by David Goodwillie, hauled the Bully Wee level with four minutes to go.

Referee Greg Aitken then denied Albion what looked like a clear spot-kick when Ross McGeachie was held back – and it was an angry Dave Mackay who spoke to the press after the game.

There is no doubt Clyde deserved the draw but it was a hugely frustrating end to the match for the Binos who last won seven straight on their travels back in 1968/69.

Stirling remain two points clear of Montrose, who were held by Annan, and four in front of Stenhousemuir and Peterhead, with the Blue Toon their next opponents at Forthbank on November 25.

Mackay’s men have no fixture this weekend due to the early Scottish Cup exit against Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale.

Overall, this has to be viewed as a good away point. Clyde, with U20 boss Tony McNally in interim charge following the recent departure of Jim Chapman, looked nothing like the team who had shipped four goals to Peterhead and Elgin in backtoback home games at the end of October.

They were strong and organised and were on course for a first clean sheet since February until Smith pounced for his 15th
