ASTOLEN car was deliberately crashed through the front of a Stockport hairdressers in the middle of the night.

Police have appealed for witnesses after the black Polo was reversed into the Hair Studio, in Offerton, on Tuesday (December 22) at 1.45am.

A man was seen stopping the vehicle, making a ramp up the kerb with fence panels and then reversing at speed to leave a gaping hole in the front of the salon.

But it is thought nothing was stolen in the ram raid leaving officers unsure as to whether the motive was theft or something more personal. The Polo had been stolen in a burglary at Cheadle Heath on December 19 and was removed from the scene a few hours later.

Steve Crompton, 48, landlord at the nearby Victoria pub, said: “I heard this thud and went outside and there was a car in the shop.

“There was two halves of a concrete fence panel placed on the kerb to make a ramp. Everyone was coming across to have a look. It feels a bit strange, it is a hairdressers not crime central. It’s a talking point that will take people’s minds off Christmas for a day or two.”

On Tuesday morning the council’s building inspectors were on site making an assessment as a police car stood guard outside.

It is unknown at this stage when the salon will reopen.

A resident in a neighbouring property to the salon, on Hall Street, only wished to be identified as Simon.

The dad-of-two, 25, said: “He just stopped at the bus stop and made a ramp then put his foot down and went straight into it. There was a big crash, I went outside and the car door was open and no one to be seen. It’s a bit of a worry.”

Police will study CCTV from the area as part of their investigation and have confirmed the reports of a ramp being used.

Inspector Steve Palmer, from the east area neighbourhood police, said: “It is very unusual to have a ram raid at a hairdressers and we will need to make enquiries before we jump to any conclusions.

“We will have to investigate what the reason for this was as at this stage to our knowledge nothing was stolen.”

Anyone with information can contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
