Chad’s Theatre

- Derek Slater

CHADS Theatre Company are presenting Visiting Mr Green, a comedy by Jeff Baron, from May 13 to 20.

It deals with the unlikely relationship of two very different people.

Mr Green is 86, retired, a widower, living alone in the New York apartment which he until recently shared with his wife; Ross Gardiner is the young man who nearly ran into him when he wandered into the road.

No-one was hurt; but Ross has been given a community order to visit Mr Green once a week, and to give him any help he can. Neither of them is happy with this arrangement, since neither of them wants it.

But gradually Ross’s resentment, and Mr Green’s suspicions, soften as they come to a rather uneasy truce.

It turns out that they both have problems, and by the end of the play they are able to give each other some muchneeded help.

The play has been seen all over the world, and translated into many languages.

Warren Mitchell had a huge success in the first UK production.

The rich, Jewish humour remains as fresh as ever; it is, in fact a small and perfectly crafted masterpiece.
