Mellor break new records
STOCKPORT County were again excellent hosts for the Lancashire and Cheshire League’s Presentation Dinner celebrating the 108th season of the league.
League chairman Mike Yates outlined the successes of clubs and thanked all of their officials and the league’s management committee for their hard and dedicated work during another hectic season.
This was supported by the league President Harry Jack in his presidential address.
A reply on behalf of the guests was given by the MFA Chief Executive Colin Bridgford who paid tribute to the quality of the league.
The award for the top club secretary went to Tommy Walker of Newton Heath, the top referee of the season was Kevin Moore and Moorside Rangers won the Fair Play trophy for their great discipline throughout a very competitive season for the club.
There was also a special award to Bob Norris of Stoconians who has been involved in the club for well over 60 years.
But undoubtedly the stars of the night were the players and officials of Mellor who set a new record of trophy success for their club and the league.
The first team won the Premier League title for the first time since the club began in 1923 and backed this by winning the Rhodes Cup.
Mellor seconds matched this by winning the division two title and the Wray Cup and the aggregate league points from both teams won them the SE Woollam Aggregate Trophy for a magnificent nap-hand of trophies which has never been achieved before in the league.
Moorside Rangers were not far behind as in addition to the Fair Play Trophy their first team won the division one title and the seconds had a league and cup double taking the division C title and the Hellawell Shield.
The other league champions were Didsbury seconds (Division 3), Hollingworth on their return to the league (Division A), Abacus Media seconds (Division B) and Bedians thirds (Division D).
Taking runners-up medals were Whalley Range (Premier division), Newton Heath (Division one), Waterloo in their first season in the league (Division two), Chorltonians seconds (Division three), Whalley Range thirds (Division A), Village Manchester in their first season in the league (Division B), Spurley Hey seconds (Division C), Old Stretfordians thirds (Division D).
During the close season the league’s management committee will be working hard to ensure that 2017-18 will be another memorable and successful season.
