Car­ni­val fun as thou­sands turn out to cheer on pa­rade

MORE than 25,000 peo­ple had fun some­times in the sun - at Stock­port Car­ni­val.

The an­nual event took place on Satur­day and in­cluded a pa­rade and fun day with the weather stay­ing dry for ev­ery­one.

There was a record num­ber of floats in the pa­rade, which be­gan at Bel­mont Way in Heaton Nor­ris and made its way through the town cen­tre to Wood­bank Park for the fun day.

More than 40 groups were in the pa­rade and Stock­port Ukrainian Club was named best float.

Other win­ners were the Cir­cus House (best walk­ing group), Dame Chardonay (best dressed in pa­rade) and Ver­non Pri­mary (best school).

First Eclipse Cheer­lead­ers and Tame­side Di­a­monds shared the best new­comer award.

It is es­ti­mated that sev­eral thou­sand pounds was raised in street col­lec­tions and this will be split be­tween char­i­ties in­clud­ing the Well­spring and Step­ping Hill’s neo-natal unit.

Luba Brown, from the or­gan­is­ing com­mit­tee, said: “It went re­ally well. More than 25,000 were at the fun day, which shows the level of sup­port and that peo­ple are re­ally get­ting be­hind us.

“It stayed dry and the sun even came out so the weather did us proud too. It is a fan­tas­tic com­mu­nity day with a good at­mos­phere.

“Ev­ery­one seemed to en­joy them­selves, which makes the work in­volved in putting the event on all worth­while.”

Or­gan­is­ers have thanked ev­ery­one who helped on the day as well as spon­sors Or­bit De­vel­op­ments.

Gresty Flow­ers, To­tally T-Shirts, the Mid­way pub, Chris Ben­nett Heavy Haulage and trans­port firm Wil­liam Kirk have all also been thanked.

Mayor of Stock­port Linda Holt at­tended the event and was on the pa­rade judg­ing panel.

At­ten­tion now turns to next year’s car­ni­val and ad­di­tional vol­un­teers to join the or­gan­is­ing com­mit­tee are be­ing sought.
