1. Al­ways use a du­vet cover. They are ma­chine wash­able and will pick up most of that un­avoid­able nasty stuff.

2. A tog value of 4.5 to 6.5 is best for sum­mer; around 9 for spring and au­tumn and any-any thing up to 15 for win­ter.r.

3. You can buy match­ing pairs of du­vets where one is for sum­mer, the se­cond for in-be­tween, but put them to­gether in­side a du­vet cover and they’re suitable for win­ter.

4. Man­u­fac­tur­ers (and sleep ex­perts!) as­sume that your bed­room is heated to 180C. 5. Dry clean­ing a du­vet can be ex­pen­sive – only some du­vet types are suitable for wash­ing ma­chines. 6. Your du­vets don’t last for­ever. It’s time to re­place them if you can see feath­ers or down pok­ing out or they start to feel a lit­tle bit lumpy.
