Busy road to reopen after three months of misery
ONE of the busiest roads in Stockport is set to re-open after three months of traffic misery.
Stockport council has announced that the A6 will re-open on schedule on Monday (October 16) for the first time since work began on a section of the road close to the town centre in July.
Meanwhile, improvement work on St Mary’s Way, which was paused to allow more traffic to use the road during the A6 closure, will start up again.
Over the past three months, engineers have undertaken essential repair works to a bridge that runs under the A6 between Exchange Street, close to the Garrick Theatre and Heaton Lane near the town centre. They have spent more than 7,000 hours repairing the almost 200-year-old bridge so that the A6 can reopen on time.
Hundreds of tonnes of material have been removed, a new concrete slab that will support the road for the future has been laid and all of the waterproofing work is now complete.
The authority has hailed the reopening as ‘a significant point to reach and great news for the town centre and users of the A6’.
There will still be works taking place in the immediate area over the coming weeks as repairs are finished, but these will not affect the road, the council say.
The temporary measures that were put in place to keep traffic moving during the work, meanwhile, are expected to be removed this weekend.
The improvement and road widening works in Stockport town centre are expected to be completed next Spring.
Councillor Kate Butler, cabinet member for economy and regeneration at Stockport council, said: “Thanks to rigorous planning and hard work by all involved we’re able to reopen the A6 on time and ensure that this important bridge in our town centre is safe for the future. Undertaking repairs of this scale is a huge job.
“I’d like to thank everyone for their patience whilst the repairs have been taking place. I’d encourage everyone to continue using our online tools to plan their journeys over the coming weeks, so that we can continue to keep Stockport moving as changes take place on our roads.”
